Getting ready to repower my 97 XB2003 with a new Merc 225 Pro XS. I would like a good hole shot with a tournament load and partner on board but don't really a need 90+ mph top end. What would be the best prop to use?

I would think a 1.62 Sporty would be a must and something like a 28 pitch prop. I am not speaking from experience. Just my best guess.

A 2.5 is a different animal. I don't know which lower unit he is using. I had a torquemaster with the holes in front of the bullet on my 225 Pro XS and went to 5.5" setback. It had great hole shot and mid range with the Tempest Plus. The torque of the Pro XS is like comparing a diesel to a gas motor. It just did not feel good with a Trophy Plus and was sluggish out of the hole - maybe it was unable to hook up because of the torque. I did not do much experimenting tho. It was just too much weight on the back of the boat for me.

I did not keep the big motor on it long. I went back to the 2.5.

If 21s can go 90 with 1.75 gears, and quick to 90 is the goal, and not topend...my guess would be 1.75s.....

I know before I had props made for the 21. The 21 ran 2-3 percent higher slip numbers in the prop slip calculator.....

For topend of course 1.65s...

Still have a lowly 2.5 so it's speculation on my part as well.

I would expect to get both out of that rig 90+ and a good holeshot. Definitely will need a sporty Gearcase or a nosecone on the torque master. I would start with a 28 turbo 4 blade and go from there if you can find one to run.

With 1.75's, you'll be limiting yourself to some steep pitches to stay off the rev limiter. I fish with a 28". Guys with 1.75's are typically fishing with 29's. Put that on a lighter boat and you'd at least be in the 30" range for a fishing prop, and more for a light load setup.

I haven't heard of anyone swapping from 1.62's to 1.75's.

Several people have made the move in the opposite direction.........

I would have to agree with gotmyally. An xb2003 is a lot lighter than my 21 footer and I run 1.75 gears/250XS and a 30P prop. 1.62 gears will keep your pitch down.

1.62 gears would give you the ability to run a smaller pitch and smaller pitch props handle much better. I have heard of several people in 21's going to the 1.62's and really loving it. Plus, the 2003 is about 300#'s lighter.

1.62 sporty with a 27 trophy (new one) would be a great combo :) still miss my 0-80mph time with my old xb2003 with a 250xs

250XS vs 225XS
225 Pro XS $14,295 with torquemaster
250 XS $14,575 with sportmaster
Prices from Jaco's. Why stop at 225? 250XS is the same weight and burns regular fuel.
