How many guys are running 150-175hp direct injection motors on their XB/XS2003's. Either Etec 150HO, Merc 175Proxs or Yamaha 175HPDI. How do they run? Do these smaller DI motors have good low end torque? Any other opinions?

just put a 2013 150 Pro XS on my XB2003 a month ago. would have put the 175 if it wasn't $2500 more and i didn't want any more debt. good low end torque and hole shot. 70 mph at rev limiter with 26 trophy. compared to the 280 that i took off it doesn't use any gas, insurance is cheaper, 5 year warranty, regular gas instead of premium, less oil, all good things....just miss the speed!! 175 ought to get you to 75 mph and have all the same benefits

DIs have GOBS of lowend torque! That's one of the bennies of that modern induction system.

As for the speed of a XB03 with a 175XS, with a coned case (which allows to better optimize the faster props, PLUS drive MUUUUCH better) speeds of 80 should be seen under ideal conditions. A few years ago we spent quite a bit of time with a XB21 2+2 with a second generation 175 Opti and the owner wouldn't allow us to remove the stock gearcase for warranty concerns. (But even he admitted and was amazed at the difference in driving and handling of our Sportmaster rigs vs his rig!) With all the batteries, troller, seats etc still in it... we regularly saw 73-74mph and there was MORE there but again, the stock gearcase was limiting our prop height and holding us back.

The DIs are solid engines and really fantastic technology. Other than sound and looks, IMHO the hotrods of yesterday really hold nothing over the DIs. Fuel and oil consumption is WAAAAAAAAY preferable with DI technology vs oldschool efi. The XS motor typically yields double the fuel mileage and you'll SWEAR the motor is MAKING oil vs using it. I typically only add oil 1-2 times a year to my 21 with a 3.0 on it (225SportXS). I also have a 2005 150DI Erude on my deckboat and it's a very economical engine but that DI system (refined FICHT post Bombardier buyout) uses about half again the amount of oil that my XS does. (But that little motor is on a BARGE that is typically LOADED, propped with a 17" pitch and just outright USED harder than my XS as well.)

For comparos: stock 200EFIs would push 03s into the 85 range under ideal conditions. Each 25hp is typically going to yield 3-5mph gains on the 03.

Were I going the smallblock DI route on an 02-03 I'd hold out for the 175 just to assure 80mph was there when you wanted it!

I've been running xs2003 and 175 proxs for three summers now. Love it. 82-83 easy with me and wife routinely breaks 80. Have to prop down a little for 4 people, coolers, beer, chairs, floats and all the other essentials. Todd fixed me a 26 OT and with that prop and a heavy load can still get upper 70's. I do have a sportmaster. First summer I didn't and that makes a huge difference. It sips gas, purrs like kitten and is extremely low cost to operate all around.

would like to a cone on my lower unit but not at the cost of voiding a 5 year warranty. Could definately run it higher and get a bigger prop.

hey I got an idea...:)...XB03fs do you finance one of the 2 lowers with cones that you have?

One of my lowers is just a backup case that the putty work is not great on

Excellent info guys! Yeah, I would want a 175hp. Bottom end is really important to pull the kids wakeboarding and tubing without having to prop down. Would like to hit 80mph. Another option I was thinking of, if I could actually find one would be a pre2006 200xs.

I would want a 20" motor and a new 200xs is way too much $$$, am pretty sure the 200xs came as a 20" back then. I will be looking for a good used DI motor this fall to replace my 225 Promax.

Yeah new with no warranty.. If they were only the same price as a 225 proxs on a regular leg With some warranty and a sporty I'd be hard presses not to go to the bank.... No warranty and 6 grand more than a normal 175 or 200 with no warranty is jacked up

For me, the first generation 200XS is a bit sketchy. Maybe it's because the one I looked at and did not buy blew up 2 weeks later. If I bought one, I'd replace the compressor before running it.

If Hotboat can be believed, I think 150 would get you to 80 and pull a skiier with the same prop. I was thinking of you when I posted this earlier.

May 93 Hot Boat, Allison GS, 150 XR6
3.3 sec to plane
5.9 0-30
7.4 0-40
14.6 0-60
80 experienced driver, 75 less experienced driver
No mention of prop or nose cone

March 2004 Hot Boat, XB2003, 150 XR6
3.22 sec to plane
5.77 0-30
7.70 0-40
15.27 0-60
70.6 top speed
29 SRX wheel (my XR4/SS2000 would go well into the 80's with a 29 SRX)

My 150 XR4 w/tuner would not match those 0-30 times with a 24" Laser but would easily pull me out (170 lb) and slowly pull my brother out (200). We both keep both feet in the bindings. I couldn't hit 80 with that prop. 72ish best.

A new DI 150 would be stronger out of the hole, but probably no stronger at top end. Get the 175XS and call it good.

I'm already saving for one. When I retire I don't want to be feeding the 225 PM.

The 175 Pro xs with a sporty is looking like a real good choice. Seems like it would have enough bottom end torque for watersports from everything I have read. 80mph is enoug for me.

Be very interested in your results with this motor pulling slalom skiers...with my 200 EFI I have to use 24P or less on slalom..Seems any prop will work for tubes or skiing on two..

the 150 and 175 proxs engines make enough torque to spin a 1.75 gear. If it were me and I were trying to maximize efficiency and as most ally owners make as much mph as possible I'd run a 1.75 gear. the bottom end loss isn't as noticeable as the mid range punch and the added top end because of rev limiter issues.

great point!! I'll remember that if/when I go looking for another gear case

I currently have a 1.75 Sporty on my Promax that I could use if I get a 175 proxs. Wish they came with a new sporty though for no extra money.

"Wish they came with a new sporty though for no extra money. "

me too.

you can't even get a sporty on the 175 Pro XS if you want to pay extra for it!!!!! To get a sporty you buy a 175 and you pay for the lower unit that comes with it, then you have to take that LU off, put it on the shelf, buy a sporty, and put it on. What ever happen to giving the customer what they want? Not any more, mother Merc dictates what they'll sell and that's it...:(
