What are the best, fairly lightly loaded speeds you guys are achieving with an XB2003 with Merc 280? And the prop that works best of course.

I have an xb2003 with a 2005 280. Trolling motor, tackle, 2 batteries and just me=100 mph. I've seen 98 with 2 people @ 200 lbs each. 96 without stretching it too hard. I run a 28 ET

Love this thread. All these years I just "assumed" low 100's rigged to fish and 105+ set-up for top-end.

I've only had this 1998 280 for a very short period of time and there have not been many top end run attempts. My son got 100.2 mph last fall with a 27 Hydromotive Quad IV OT and last week he got 100.7 mph with a 28 ET. He feels there is more there to get but possibly not a lot more. I know with my XB2003 with 225X, it took years of messing with it to hit the best of 97.1 mph. I just assumed that the 280 on top end would be faster than 3-5 mph faster than what it ran with the 225. Maybe my assumptions were incorrect. Time will tell. Keep in mind that the 97.1 was a one time deal but with the 225X, it would run 96+ most any time.

The frontal profile of the XB03 starts to run into a real aerodynamic wall right around 100 or so~. After that, I think you need to add large increases in HP to make fairly small gains in speed. I don't doubt that there's been 03's in the 105 range, but they weren't being pushed by normal, stock 260's or 280's, by any means. Grandsports are likely a little slipperier and lighter, though....

Definitely aero challenged. I had a 03/280 for a while. Right @ 99 with a 28 ET with the .090" lip and 14.5" setback. 103 with a 28 Hoss and .020" lip and 8" setback. Heard Myron did 107. I was even with the pad...Didn't have the stones to wring out the last couple mph

stock 260, 30" masco, stock bottom with one person. 101 with staker radar gun at a slight angle, which may have been a mile or 2 faster because of angle. ran like it was on a rail later Larry D

Didn't Scott run 107 with his yellow XB2003/280? What mods were done?

Actually the GS is a lot more problematic in the 100mph plus range than the 2003. This is because of the deck and high freeboard of the GS. That puts a ton of downforce on the deck that is very unbecoming in a cross wind... Bob to be fair you have to realize most of your runs from what I saw were in the (Consistent) 93-95 range day in day out. So if you are hitting triples now consistently, that is a pretty fair increase. And it makes sense because when playing with the GSE going from a motor that put out 210 -215 propshaft power to a built promax, I picked up about 6-8 mph with an increase of 60 -70 horsepower. You ROUGHLY did the same from the 225x to the 280 and are consistently running about 6-8 mph faster. The math doesn't lie, nor do the numbers fellas. Throw out your 97.1 because if it was never repeated, then it is not a constant number (Not saying it did not happen) All the times we spoke what were our numbers ????? during testing. Take those numbers against what your testing numbers are now with the 280 and there is your increase. I think you are doing great !!! BTW go up on your 27 OT and it will add some more numbers. It is running a lot more efficient then the 28 ET. Be fast be safe...
