24V Mercruiser trim will make a huge difference. When I started running mine, I had the old "coffee can" style and it was a pig out of the hole even with that at 24V. When I switched to 24V Mercruiser it made a night and day difference. I also run tranny fluid in mine.

I trim it all the way down with a quick up bump just to reverse the motor. As soon as you matt it, you can be on the 24V up. The first 100 feet is where you can win and lose a race. ;)

It's all about timing when you run off the button.

As Erik said, you just need an extra solenoid and a dedicated trim switch on the wheel. I used the cheap coil/rubber button style. And ya don't need a big cranking battery for the second batt. A lawnmower battery works great without spending a bunch of cash.
