Looking for some property to hunt while in ohio public or private bow hunting. After losing my mom I thought that I would take my dad on a dream hunt for some large bodied whitetails. I have never been out of the state of Tennessee hunting neather has he for deer anyway.

Todd I have been thinkin about your question but I just aint familiar with any public land, much less up in Ohio. They DO have some brutes up there, no doubt. Sadly most giant deer areas don't have much public access. The largest bodied deer south of Canada are usually found in eastern KS, IO, MN and WI. But again there is very little public land available around there.

I hunted with an eye surgeon buddy from Memphis in Dec. 2001 on a large lease he had near Manhattan, KS (Fort Riley area) and while I was there he killed a 169" 9ptr that was estimated by the game wardens and a biologist at the game dept headquarters there in Manhattan as having been a buck that would've had a live summer weight (peak annual weight) of 400-410#s. It was THE damndest deer I have ever seen, I have seen larger racks but NEVER a body remotely that large. But the does, fawns and smaller bucks I saw around there convinced me that they are just HUGE animals compared to most other areas of the county. Being that was only a couple months after 9/11 the area was "alive" with bombing runs and impacts that could be heard across the lake (Tuttle Creek Resevoir) at Fort Riley. There probably is some public access but I don't know how hard it would be to get on.

Canada as well has some GIANT bodied deer, but hunting up there is harder than many would believe. As southerners we are conditioned to seeing alot of deer each time out. The herd densities in CN are much lower than the overpopulated states we live in down south. Sitting in minus degree temps and maybe only seeing 1-2 deer per hour is not what alot of folks consider fun. BUT the chance of killing a 300+# animal is a real posibility.

Alot of the "big" deer in OH are 200-225# (dressed weight) and certainly are larger than the bird dogs we call deer here in TN!

thanks for the reply RED. I knew you would be the man that would know. There are alot of public land to hunt in Ohio but I would like to get a good idea of the best part to go to. I have some guys that hunt up there that I work with. They have taken some large deer 150-170 class.
We are going the second full week of november. We got on a draw hunt in east tn for the 11,12 of nov. I killed a 8 point a couple years ago that weighed 129 field dressed but was only year and a half old. The littlest of the deer they have brought back from ohio is in the 160 lbs dressed and 140lbs for the does.
