I get my gear shift engaged into forward, the boat starts forward, then I hear two loud "clunks" that sound like the lower unit is engaging into forward. The sound does not reoccur, and when I throttle back down to idle, then back up again, no klunk. It sounds to me like the lower engaging, but I'm already in gear, I think. Throwing the gear shift all the way forward makes no difference. Maybe the gear cable needs work? Thanks.

I don't know but I would keep a eye on it. Hope that you figure it out.

That would be the clutch dog disengaging from the forward gear in the lower unit. Check the shift cable adjustment on the side of the motor. you could be out of adjustment. If you adjust it too far forward it could start "going clunk" in reverse. You might also want to check the lower unit grease for metal fines and make sure the bearing carrier nut has not started to loosen. My 2 cents wroth is find the problem before the lower fails and gets into your $$$$
