Anyone know how much the old 225 HO carb Johnson's weigh?
What is the actual weight of a merc 250 pro xs?

I ask about the Johnson in relation to the merc because of the town I grew up in, there was a Johnson / Allison dealer and guys ran the 225 HO motors on xb2002 for years.

Still considering the switch to the 250 pro xs

I could be wrong, but I think the old H.0. engines were in the 455-460 range and the ProXS comes in close to 500...

The 1999, 2000 & 2001 Johnson 225 HO's were all the 3.0L Carb motors. They are all listed at a svelt 450 lbs (light by todays standards). Strong motors that put out an honest 240 ish HP. By comparison, All 3.0L opti motors list at 505 lbs. The 200xs (2.5L) lists at 440 lbs and the 2.5xs lists at 450 lbs.

Remember all listed weights are not in usuable order. No prop, fluids, heck probably not even spark-plugs LOL

Thanks guys. It seems then that my 2.5 200xs is more comparable in weight to the than the merc 3 liter.

The 2012 Evinrude brochure says the engine weights include fluids. 514 lb for a 250 HO. The 2012 Merc brochure says the weights are dry. 505 lb for a 250 Pro XS.

That 350 lb Proxmax is looking pretty light.

350lbs would be REAL light. I have a 225X and I think all the promaxes are between 400-420lbs.

Probably right. 250HO lists "dry" at 507 lbs. Not bad considering the 3.4L Displacement.
Weight vs Displacement goes to the Yammie SHO. 4.2L at a "dry" 505 lbs!

350lb 225 Promax seems awefully light. Maybe a 300 Drag or a SST?

Pro maxes all are right at 400 pounds(150-225 hp), Sorry Whipper but basically all 2.5 and 2.4 litre mercs are anywhere from 395 to 435 pounds mainly due to what type of cowlimg skirt and pan set up they have. The 400 pound models are usually merc racing ones(pro maxes included) and the 430-435 motors are standard models(200xri's). The 2.4 models did weigh around 400 pounds standard model.

The promax weight may be without a gearcase... I would just about bet my meager paycheck that a complete ProMax will come in lighter than the standard fishing V6 of the same era only by the savings of the hi-po cowl... I'd guess just a little under 400 lbs, but that's still light by todays standards...

I dug up the old literature from 96. Hi P.O. 260, 350 lbs., ss 260 375. That's what mother Mercury said at the time anyway.

Those weights hack posted are dead on. If yall would start thinking outside the box, yall would be amazed at how much weight can be taken off the new 3.0 motors. No your not going to buy it from Mercury that way but it can be done.

The new 3.0 cowlings are HEAVY. The only difference in the production 250 Pro XS and the merc racing 250XS 'lightweight cowling' is that the latter doesn't have any insulation inside it. Mine was about 35 lbs or so. I've heard reports of some carbon fiber ones in the 7-10 lb range but never could find a price tag. Bet they are pricey. But would be an easy 25 lb weight savings! Probably wouldn't matter on a 21, but if you were trying to set up a big block on a smaller boat it would be a quick win to shave off some weight.

I replaced my alien cowl set up with a carbon fiber set up. When I shipped the alien cowl, skirt and pan off, it weighed 43.5 lbs. The carbon cowl, skirt and pan weigh about 10 lbs. The CF set up was around $1200.
