Had to change out the trim motor on my 250 XS and noticed that the trim fluid was RED in color. This is the first Ive seen thats red. Anyone noticed this color fluid in the trim system and if so where do you get it or is it ok to mix with the clear?

Automatic transmission fluid. Lots of people use it, but I'm not a fan.

I use power steering fluid in mine, which is clear.

That's what I was guessing it was due to the smell but not sure why it was changed. I'm the second owner and I wouldn't think it came from the factory that way.

I was informed that the RED fluid is standard mercury fluid that has a DYE added to it for leak detection.

I used 30 weight motor oil in mine. Thats what it said to use, but if I ever drain it, I will go back with Power steering fluid.
