Is it common for the shift shaft seal to leak fluid on a sportmaster lower unit after a hard run? I assume the seal will relieve extreme pressure and still keep water from entering the lower unit.

Fluid

That's usually something that sould happen only after you've changed the fluid in the gearcase. Any extra fluid will blow by the shift shaft seal.

After Change

If you got just a little too much gear lube in the case on a change out it will force the excess gear lube out of that seal. It will not ruin the seal or allow water in the case.

You could take your top plug out of the case (the vent plug) and let any excess lube out. That should stop the issue.

Thanks for the info. I thought the seal was a safety valve for to much oil, but I was not 100% sure.
