Hey Larry, I run a 2000 225pm, since I removed the oil injection, I went to 50:1 Klotz, but I'm not 100% on the ratio, so I'm curios on the replys also, and I just started running the Klotz, before that it was all Merc. premium plus.
50:1 KLOTZ since 1998 with my 225 promax and when i changed motors to the 280 in 2001 I still ran 50:1 even with the rpms of my 280!!!!!! Now a lesser oil i might would think about a little more oil but with klotz no way!!!
I believe 40-1 is what the books say to use in the 2.5's
If these guys are doing well with the klotz at 50-1 then I'd say go for it.
But I would also say... DON'T if you are using anything of less quality than Klotz !!
My 99 225 SS has been "sans earl injection" for several years and I have been mixin 3oz per 100% Pennz ever since and knock on wood she aint mista beat. Better a lil to much than a lil "not enough"...
Don't know what that makes out too ratio wise, it's just easier to figger in mu haid!!!

I'm also running Penzoil 100% synthetic at the same ratio in my mod promax at 7000+ RPM. I've been running this oil in all my Mercurys for over 6 years with no problems. I buy this oil at WalMart for $20 per gallon --- a good deal at this price. Also, I remember Jay Smith posting on another board that the engines that run this oil seem to have less wear and are cleaner when he takes them down for a rebuild.
It is sold in one gallon and one pint containers and is clearly marked 100% synthetic or full synthetic. Also, there could be some difference in price in different parts of the country ---- here it is $20/gal .
If you can not find it at Walmart you could try "Boat US" or "West Marine" but usually at a higher cost.
I use the Wal-mart Pennzoil synthetic blend and my powerhead life is very good [1000+ hours on my 1st one]. I am still running the stock oil injection system.
Be careful about running too much oil, since oil displaces fuel going through the injectors/jets and results in a leaner burn [higher a/f ratio]. We learned this racing motocross.
