You can buy an E-Tec 25..... Food for thought. Good luck finding a late model 2 stroke for under ~16-1800.....

I'm considering that option too. The good thing is, those are coming with a 6 yr warranty now.

Still heavy compared to the previous generations of 2 strokes though. Hate the thought of ditching a 10 year old 40 HP for a newer 25 HP and actually adding extra weight in the process.......but gotta meet the 25 HP restriction.

I've heard the new 25 Etec screams. I've got a 2005 25 Merc.... strongest 25 I've been around.

Suprisingly enough...the duck hunting crowd swears by the old 25HP 3 cyl, 3 carb SUZUKI motors from the mid 90s. Those will still bring $2500+ around here, even beat up and ragged old junk. Those guys swear up and down that an old suzie 25 will smoke a yam/merc/rude 25 of any era.

I'd rather buy new if I have to spend that much though!

comparing the new 25hp motors, the ETEC is still quite a bit lighter even at 146 lbs

The numbers I saw were closer to 180 with electric start and power trim/tilt. Did the 146 lbs number come from a rope-start motor?

Yes, 15" shaft / rope pull. When you add all the fluff to it, it gets into the 150-160 lb range.

I'm loosely looking for one also, been paying attention to the 20hp-70hp market for a while
.. Long as the engine has been used responsibly, I don't think there's necessarily a bad one amongst the major brands.. Preferably I want a Yamaha or tohatsu, but the rest wouldn't scare me away.. Merc and erude have obviously been building outboards forever but anyone who has ever ridden motorcycles knows that the other jap brands need no introduction to 2-stroke and 4-stroke technology..
