I've looked at the lubers on the site. Looks like quite a project. Is there anything to lube the steering with that's quicker and easier without screwing up the steering.

Yea, I plan to go hydraulic some day. Just don't need to spend the money right now. Is the lube that the merc manual says to use a no no?

What your wanting to do when ya have stiff cables is to flush them out. Not put more grease in them. They are stiff because of trash or caked grease or maybe corossion.
If ya put more grease in there before flushing you will trap the bad stuff in. So ya gotta flush um first. Automatic trans fluid is good for this. ATF has a high detergent level.

T-Rex has a good way to do it. Find an old steering cable tube. The kind ya put on the outboard. Cut off one end and attach a bell reducer and air hose fitting.
Then ya screw the threaded end on the cable. Fill the tube with ATF and hook up an air hose to push the ATF through the steering cable. Ya need to have a catch pan under the steering helm to catch the ATF.

On my old bass boat with dual cables I purchad a cable lube system called cable buddy and a bottle of synthetic lube. Worked fine. It consists of 2-s/s nuts drilled for lube,1 for the motor tube,1 for bolt on tube. A bottle of synthetic lube with adaptor and hose. Just remove plugs after install turn bottle up side down and turn wheel from stop to stop every 3 months or so. I got this from bass-pro,easy to install. One hole to drill thru tubes after replacing one existing nut on each tube.

When I put my hydraulic steering in, I bet I had to cut 100+ wire ties to get the cables out. When I put everything back together, I used velcro cable wraps (made for bundling network cables). Should make it easier to get it apart if I have to replace a hydraulic hose or something. Plus I can undo them to run additional wires for depth finds, etc. instead of adding more wire ties to the clusterf---.

The only reason I know about those wire ties is the trolling motor battery cables are wire tied with the steering cables…. Man there is a lot of them!

I thnikn I lost like 5 lbs in my boat takin half the wire ties out... LOL

I put hydralic steering in my xb2003 and like it. Pulled the orginal out when I bought the boat used,so don't know if it would drive better with push pull or hydralic. But when it is fixing to do a bat turn I can't fell it with the hydralic. Just felt the bow lift a little high at 75 before. I had the hydralic in my old boat and put in xb2003.
