I've noticed a couple of times now that when I get ready to head out to the lake that there is a small amount of oil that is leaking out of the rear of my lower unit. Its somewhere inside and only does gthis every now and then. The gear lube is not milky from water and is changed about every other month or so. Is the rear seal leaking or whats the deal. The drain plug is inside the unit beneath the propshaft, but it doesn't appear to be coming from there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This is not gear oil, it appears to be motor oil.

There is an o-ring that seals the front of the bearing carrier against a machined lip of the case.
I don't see that o-ring leaking unless someone had it apart recently and/ or the carrier nut isn't tight to spec.
Conventional wisdom says, if oil is leaking out, water can get in.
I'd take it somewhere and have it pressure/vacuum tested before it gets worse in between your changes and you don't realize it.
