I need to install a new fuel tank into my Grandsport because.. well the original one isn't there..
I plan to run either a 260 or 280, no skiing or towing being done, just be a weekend ripper boat.
Anyone with a GS with either engine think 22Gal is too little? even if ill never be more than about 10 miles from a fuel station.

It depends on the 260/280. I ran a 35, yes 35G, tank on my XR2001 and it sucked gas through my 280. The 200XS on my Grand Sport hardly used gas, and 24G was plenty. It really depends on how you are tuned, and how far you want to go. Any 260/280 is pretty thirsty though.

Any reccomendation on a custom tank builder, or any pre-built ones? sometimes gets rough here so baffled or foam filled is preferred

I’m running a 200 ProMax on my GS with a 30 gallon tank and I wouldn’t want any less fuel than that, but I do a lot of long runs and hate having to deal with jugs. I see no reason not to stuff the biggest tank you can in there and just not fill it up all the way if you want less.

Msethsmile2 is mostly correct. My 280/XB03 drinks it. I have 30 gallon tank and carry 5 for Jasper. I come in on fumes. And if I run hard early might not make it. I wouldn’t get anything smaller than 30 gallons. You can always partially fill it but carrying gas in the boat sucks. I usually ride with 2 people and a heavy cooler - cooler gets lighter at an alarming rate, just like the gas tank. Too much gas/beer is not a problem.

Have a buddy with 280/xb03. Same basic hull, 30 gallon tank. He may comment. On Jasper run (80++ miles) he carries 2-3 extra 5 gallon jugs--its thirsty. That's 45 gallons. I can do it in less than 24--laser motor. Get large of a tank as possible--30 gal.--particularly if you're going transatlantic.
I made the Jasper run with my xb2003 with slide intake 2.5 225 Super Mag and Brucato ACU with Todd Catrett program on 18 gallons. We ran the boat up to 98 mph with two people several times.

The year before I ran the same boat and engine by myself but had a Brucato tune in the ACU and it used 28 gallons. The program makes a big difference.

I ran Jasper, which is around 80 miles round trip I think, and had just over a quarter tank left. I ran pretty hard for most of it and even set my current top speed at 96.3.

1/2 way between the Gay Bay and LA.
When I took out the tank on my XB2003 1994 model, I had to remove the edge guard that surrounded the opening. It was that tight. Also the tank sides bulged out so they had to compress to pull it out. A flat strap around the tank helped to both compress and have something to pull with.

Some folks report good results when using a vacuum to collapse the sides of the tank. Moeller in Tennessee made the original tanks for the xb2003 and the GS.

Call the folks at Moeller. They are very nice and helpful.
