It's mostly the lower unit mods. I'm worried I'd blow it up like the previous owner did. The engine only has an RPM range of 4500 to 5500. This will be my first high performance boat so I am far from an expert on this. The cost of gas concerns me too.
Lower-unit mods are very common and are just about synonomous with High Performance boating. Not sure I would be too worried about that. IMO a 150 to 175 would be VERY economical overall. It takes fuel to make HP, and unless you would be WOT all the time, it would be a pretty economical powerplant. Another deciding factor over HP is technology. DFI's are 30ish percent more effecient OVERALL compared to a Carb or EFI 2-stroke (They ALL suck gas at WOT). 4-strokes are roughly the same.

I guess one would determine what speed range you are shooting for and then decide what is the overall best HP will be best to get you there.
