No modifications are needed on the back part of the plate, aeneas. Lowering those holes won't help you any, due to the top of the engine bracket overhanging the top of the jackplate.

One more question: On the jack plate there is a what looks like a proto-skid planer... It looks like a professional installation. Is this a one off?

Alright, new question again...

I was going to remove the jack plate today but there were some rubber at the end of the bolts. Why are they there and how do I remove them?



Oh, one more: what material is the jack plate made of?

Those are just caps. Pry them off or jack them off with the nut. Anodized Aluminum. When you get the new plate make sure it's cut at the top edge on the transom side so it doesn't squash the aluminum piece that covers the top cap to hull seam.
I had to cut one, used a router.
