I am putting together some information and comparisons together on
the Mercury 225xs and 250xs- how they perform on the 21ft Allison
bassboat. Information from anyone running these motors would be
appreciated.
. top speed - loaded and light loads
. holeshot
. fuel milage
. how is your motor set-up
. any other special set-up info, setback, battery placement ect...

any other pros and cons on these motors would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input

Greg,

I'm on my second Xb21 ProSport/250xs. Had and 05 now an 06. I did a fair amount if testing the first one(05), here are some numbers- full load- trolling motor, 3 batteries(one port, two center), batt charger, 1/2 tank fuel, no water in livewell, two guys(me 185 pass 160), good amount of tackle, all numbers at sea level with good air. 8" setback. propshaft 1/2" below.

25 trophy 87.4 holeshot real good
26 trophy 89.4 holeshot decent
27 trophy 91.7 holeshot not so good
28 Performer 4 90.0 holeshot not so good with load, real good light on fuel
28 Hydromotive Q IV O/T 90.0 holeshot not so good

The trophy were all stock. I didn't do any "light" testing. Stock Sportmaster gearcase 1.62

Unfortunately, I don't have any of those props now to try on the new one. I'm currently running a 27 Hydro QIV X O/T - It has a real good holeshot and topend 88.4, but haven't had the above conditions yet.

I will say this, I think the 06 boat feels a little heavier in the bow than the 05 did.

There is good info on Allisonowners.com. Just look under XB21 which provides much of info you are looking for seperated by motor type and horse power.

My experience as followers with 2003 XB21, 2003 Mer 250XS, 1:62 gears, 5850 rev limiter, hydralic jack plate, semi light load (me at 160, 1 or 2 grandkids at 75 lbs each or small adult, tons of fishing gear ,empty live well, 1/2 to 2/4 fuel).

Trophy 27DAH: Excellent holeshot within 2 boatlengths or less within 2-3 seconds, top speed 90 -92, 77MPH at just 5000RPM'S.

Hydromotive 28Quad4OT: Literally jumps out of the water within 2-3 seconds but with very high bow lift not unlike space launching. WOT right at 90plus, better transome lift than Trophy, much easier to drive with less torque. Also runs about 77 at 5000RPM'S.

I have run both props with 3 adult, total weight about 550 lbs and 2 grand kids at 75 lbs each (total weight 700lbs) with holeshot painfull but within 7-8 seconds, with rig crusing once on pad.Runs 80 easily but with this load I have not run WOT.

Jaco Edition 30 Chopper: Most fun prop and easiest to drive. Hole shot a tad slower than other 2 props but much hole shot slippage as expected. Never tried to really string it out but have hit 85 at 5500-5600 RPM'S.Less efficient than other props and higher RPM'S at low and mid range .

I generall run at 1/2 to 1 " below pad but as High as 1" above. Jim Barnes of Allison advised me rig could run as high as 1 3/4 " above pad but I see no need as rig performs well for me even when prop buried. As a fisherman 1st and only a hot rod on a limited basis, perhaps my expectation are somewhat less, but my rig"s performance suits me to a "T". I wll have had this rig 4 years come May am on the lake 4-5 times per week and excluding trim motor replacement FOUR TIMES (3 under warranty) and a bad coil, my rig has been realitively bullet proof. Good luck with your comparative survey--- Geno PS: Regarding batteries-- have 2 series 27 on port side toward rear and cranking in middle towards port, both as set up by Allison and Jacos. Believe balancing could be improved bb moving middle battery towards starboard. Regarding mileage-- always 5mpg regardless of how I run on a given day (per info on Garmin gps and fuel added), including idle time looking for structure. Geno
