Hey - I'm looking at a boat with this engine (not selling my Allison!). Its never been apart - if I get a compression/leakdown test done, and a lower-unit check, together with a test ride, is it a advisable purchase? I know a 300XS is preferred and all that, and there's risk invovled, but would you walk away from this engine?? Tx.

This is just what I have picked up over the years from owners comments of the various 300 hp Mercury's. Note: I have not ever owned any of them.

The 300 Promax was pretty strong but was right at 300hp.

The 300xs is slightly stronger at 305"ish" hp but has a weight penalty compared to the PM.

The 300x is by far the strongest 300 in Mercs stable. But pays a fuel/oil penalty compared to the XS.

The 3.0L EFI's seem to be pretty good and reliable motors overall.

Sorry, you probably already knew all of that but I hated to see nobody reply.
