Ok guys, I know this as probably been discussed before, but I can't remember anything... Ok I got a 225x with a torque master gear case. If I was to buy a XB2002 what would be the best gear case for it with this motor. Should I trade for a sportmaster and have it modified or go with a nose cone like JC's or something. I would like idea about prices too.

And what is a Steckbauer gear case???

PAUL :)

Sportsmaster

Unless your looking for the last few mph. the sportmaster will do just fine.
However if you already have a torquemaster it will be cheaper to have it modified.
I just priced a new sportsmaster (had a collision with some floating  debris)
They only want $5900.00 for a new one.
The Steckbauer is a modified XR4 gearcase with a smaller diamater. I don't think they stand up to heavy everday use very well.

WOW 5900.00 for a new sporte  I think I would have to go used...
about how much would it cost to have the torque master done and how much for a sportmaster to have modified.
Thanks,
Paul :)

Paul,

I don't know what the going rate is to put a nose cone and low water pickup on the torqmaster.
You might ck the web for BOB's or Tooters.
I have found a new Sportsmaster cheeper than the 5900.00 on the internet.

The Torquemaster is a good rugged case. Add the Tooters nose cone and you can expect years of 100 plus mph service with nothing more than oil changes a couple or three times a year.

Yep Cliff, I could tell you.....

Hit the Img button, insert the link, hit the Img button again.

But it has to have jpg or picture file to work.

be prepared for cracked skegs on the torqemasters.they are fast but wont last.225.............definately sportmaster.at 90+ you probably wont lose any speed if you will fool with the setup.you can generally run a sportmaster a little higher so it gives you a little back vereses the crappy shape of the case and the BIG skeg

A Torquemaster is a good case with a nosecone. The internal parts are heavy-duty compared to the 200 gearcase and most of the parts from a Torquemaster will interchange with a Sportmaster.

The only problem with a nosecone is in time the epoxy will crack… If you have someone put a nosecone on make sure they weld the nosecone to the case, then epoxy it. I have run a 200, Torquemaster, and Sportmaster and the Sportmaster gearcases are best for everyday use.

With that being said, if you go the nosecone route on the Torquemaster since you own one already you will be very happy. It is a great case and if you watch the epoxy close you will be just fine. If you notice the epoxy starting to crack have the whole epoxy job redone… Not just a small repair.

I had some epoxy crack (very small amount) and thought it would be fine for a little while and then one day a big chunk let loose, I was alone in the boat running low 90’s and the whole back off the boat blew out… WHAT A RIDE!

Oh yeah the Steckbauer gearcase is usually an XR6 gearcase with the Sportmaster gears cut down so they fit into the small diameter XR-6 gearcase.

This is a heavy duty XR-6 gearcase with a heavy duty bearing carrier and other improvements but they won’t last if ran everyday.

If you’re going to spend that kind of money then I would only use the gearcase for special events such as a top speed runs or drag races.

I almost bought one, but when they let go you have to send the gears, parts or gearcase to Steckbauer every time and they are a lot of $$$ and downtime.

PS if you buy a gearcase (any style) and it is used be VERY CAREFUL you are not buying someone else’s problem.

A new coat of paint and fresh oil make them all look purty.

Thanks

Hey Guys thanks for the info. Be nice to have a extra gear case laying around to use when one goes bad. It would be really nice to have a Steckbauer case put on when won't to do high speed runs buy yourself. I heared some of you guy can change out a case in under 30mins.

THANKS AGAIN,

Paul :)

The only reason we can change a gearcase that fast is due to experience... and the experience ain’t nothin to brag about. Change the oil in your gearcase a lot (three times a year is not too much) and inspect your prop, skeg, epoxy, steering cables and bolts every time out.

An extra gearcase is a VERY good idea... If you have it you won't need it for years, If ya don't... well you know a month in the middle of the summer is A LONG time to be down.
