wasn't there an XR-2? Can the 2.5 be converted to a 200hp or bigger?

The XR-2 was a 2.0 liter 150. They ran good though...

The XR-6 has some really small exhaust ports and it doesn't breath too well. They can run but you would probably be better off finding a 2.5 200 rather than modding the XR-6.

if i remember correctly, when the "xr" series began, they were supposed to be a little hotter than the standard 150hp. kinda like the whole "gt" thing with omc. they were supposed to be pushing the upper end of the 10% rule. all i can see in the latest xr6's is they were just carburated powerheads instead of being injected. mt

So...Are all 200 Mercs 2.5L? I am mercury dumb....Had a Mercury 150 BlackMax on a Champion years ago but I never knew how "big" it was. Other than that I've run probably 10 OMC's... Was looking into getting a lighter motor. I think......My 225 Evinrude is very top heavy. You would think it had a 30" shaft instead of 20". Appreciate the info.:banghead

No they are not. They were 2.4's until 1991 then they were all 2.5's then in I think 2003 they started making a 3.0 liter 200. There was a 200 that was a 2.5 built until 2005. I think................

there were also 200hp 2.0l motors even though they were a product of mercury racing dubbed sst120. and i think they may still be available overseas. there they call them an xr2 200hp. i learn new stuff everyday and just try to pass it on! mt

what to do about your "skying" problem i guess is what power would you rather have? do ya like omceese? ive had a few and only got one that still runs and has never given me problems.(its as old as i am,35) im kinda partial to mercury. my boat has a 20" mid on it and it looks right. i like the the 15" motors look too, but for my intended purpose i dont want my motor gettin dunked everytime i come of plane! lol! it dont much matter to me what it looks like to tell the truth, as cant none of the bbass barges catch up to get a good look anyway! me personally, id sell the omc while its running and look for a 2.5 200 mercury and see how much faster your boats is with 25 less hp. mt

I thought a 200 would be plenty. Now I wish I had found a 260 to have rebuilt for my boat. If I were you I would be thinking 260+. Good luck.

Oh yea!!! I'm thinking 260+, 280+, $$$$$... My wife isn't on the same page i am. The bigger the better, just lighter.....:smile:smile:smile Just like when I was drag racing. One would think an S-10 truck with 450+HP small block would be enough right? Got bored with it.:banghead

My 1992 2.5L 150HP carried my boat really well but like someone said earlier, the more HP the better. The 150 is on the shipping crate and will be for sale soon, but I kept it for backup until I had some time on the 280. They are great motors for fishing and run-n-gun style but it was easier to buy a whole new motor instead of trying to get above 225HP with that setup.

Wayne Taylor makes a shorty OS mid that adapts the Sportmaster. Do a Allison mod on the sporty and your got a rocket.
This motor is forsale. 7K
