after changing lower unit lube, i noticed a crack about 2 inches long extending back to exhaust opening on bullit the crack is not all the way through, this skeg looks like it has been modified at some point, ( the boat was 6 mts old when i purchased it from a used car lot in kentucky) the skeg looks to have been extended about 3 inches back to the exhaust opening, in fact when running a 28 chopper 11 there is only 1/4 inch clearance to prop blade, is this crack repairable, and who would you guys recomend. also the crack is right where the skeg attaches to the bullit.

I was in the same situation as you once. While the temptation is great to have it welded, I would caution against such a move. I am of the opinion that they cannot be reliably repaired and you risk your life as well as others around you in running one that is. Might not be a big deal on a boat capable of lesser speeds than an Allison, but do you want to lose your steering and hull lift at 75mph or above?

Sounds like my old gearcase. Is one of the water holes filled in? I sold it very cheap to a friend and he sold it to someone else. Don't think he was honest with the person about it. Ant way, get rid of it! Once they crack they are DANGEROUS.

Im in agreement on being unsafe, even if welded right there would always be a doubt in my mind it could come apart at the wrong time, there are 2 water hole pick ups, is there supposed to be more?

Yes, there are three. Supposedly it helps to weld up the one holes. I tried having all the mods done to my original case, and that was one of them. Really not worth doing. But definately don't run the cracked case. Not worth the risk.

crack in sportmaster

Do not try to weld it. It is not a matter of if it will break but when. I had a modified sportmaster and it broke( bat turn at 80+ with wife). I had it welded by a competent aluminum welder and it broke again after aprox 15 hours(another bat turn). We then added a thin piece of aluminum for strength and it started to crack and I finally replaced it. Every time it broke it, it dinged the prop and cost me more in repairs. I now run a stock sportmaster with stock steering and have had zero problems(4 yrs).I run a Grandsport with a 225 ss. Mike
