Hey, Guys would it be a good idea to let a 225X run out of gas?? The boat has been siting for 5 months. When I put the boat away for the winter I did put some fuel stabilizer in the tank. Its got a 1/4 tank of gas, I thought I would run it all out..but don't know if it would be a good idea or not, don't won't to tear nothing up.

Paul :)

with the sta bil in there and 3/4 tank of fresh gas it should be okay. it's always best to have a full tank over the winter time or it will get condensate in there and over time will be alot of water.

Still wondering????

I am probably going to put more gas in it. I always use Premium, the motor calls for no less than 92 octane.

Still wondering, what it would do if I run it out of gas, I know it wouldn't hurt the older EFI motors, but what will it do to the X motor????

Thanks for the replys,

Paul :)

If you’re talking about what to do before you put the boat up for a long period of time.

What you want to do is add the fuel stabilizer to the fuel, run the engine so the fuel stabilizer is throughout the fuel system and filters.

After I do this I just fill up the fuel/water separator filter with straight two stroke oil and run it at an idle with the boat backed down the boat ramp until she smokes like crazy, then I shut her off. This oils all the bearings and cylinders and ALL.

What most people do is pull the sparkplugs out and shoot a light lubricant or fogging oil in the cylinders and spin they flywheel so it coats the surfaces and prevents moister and possible rust build up.

Then change the gear oil, just incase there is some water in there.

Now that you are going to run your boat after it has been sitting. If you had a

Well what was meaning is, will it hurt the motor to run it out gas. I had a guy tell about one time he was coming in from a tournament and ran out of gas. He had a 225 optimax motor and had very hard time getting it to run again. Just wanting to know if it hurt this 225X, If that happen.

THANKS,

PAUL :)

No oil

We used to do it every time with some of the old carb. motors. It would burn the plug clean and also keep the varnish from building up.

However if it's running out of fuel it's running out of oil!!
I quit doing it a long time ago. It may never cause a problem but anymore Im not willing to take the chance of sticking a piston or scalding a bearing.

set up for winter

When I set mine up for winter I disconnect the fuel line after the primer bulb and use the bulb to start a siphon into a gas can to get all of the gas out of the tank. I never worry about whats left over in the motor because in only sits for 3 months max, if that. Then before I go the lake fill up with premeyum.

not to change the subject here, but did you ever have to change the spark plugs on that motor? my uncle just changed his on his x motor and his bill for 6 plugs was $121  i was like wow, not only is gas getting high but a $20 dollar spark plug.

Spark plugs

Hey,spanky yes I have changed the plugs and they are too high, I pay about $110.00 for mine. I have changed them twice. The last time I looked the motor had only 60HRS. on it, so its about time to change them again.I guess I could try some others, but I like to use what Mercury says to use. I have to drive about 70 miles to get them. I also have go to the same place to get the oil and its about $20.00 gal.

If it costs $100+ to change the plugs, mine are gonna get sand-blasted and re-used.

I've heard (and I don't know if there is any truth to it) that you should not run a v-6 outboard out of gas because the top cylinders run out of gas before the bottom cylinders and get cycled several times with no gas/oil.

However, I have always ran the gas out of my 2 and 3 cyl. duck motors at the end of hunting season so the carbs don't gum up. Seems to work...haven't had a problem yet. Before I started doing this, the carbs would always need to be rebuilt before the next duck season.

just fyi....

BPR8ES , Exact same plug except not a long life. just a plain copper core.
I have set waiting to go in but I only have 45hrs on my motor so I have not taken out the originals yet. $2.15ea. @ auto zone

also......I do the same thing on all my trucks too. replace the long life platinum tip plugs with standard copper core.
